In this particular Bond movie, he is isolated, even more so than in the other ones. M, his boss, orders a fellow agent to take a shot even though Bond is not out of harm's way from the bullet. He survives, barely, but this causes him to question M's loyalty to him and his own loyalty to England and the agency . . .

Bond's age and effectiveness is also questioned as he goes back to work in an agency that is rapidly changing . . .

This is definitely a darker, more brooding Bond than what we're used to . . .

Then enter Javier Bardem whose cheek was caved in from a cyanide pill. .. . he used to be a double O and feels he was double crossed . . 

He lends well to the movie's darker tone . . .

But when there is light in the movie . . .

It is spectacular . . .

It would not be a crime if this movie won for Best Cinematography . . .
